Doug's death hits Rahne especially hard because he dies protecting her. In New Mutants #60, the Ani-Mator fires at her and Doug takes the bullet. There isn't a fight she can win afterward that fixes that. Doug is gone, and she has to live with the fact that he stepped in front of her. By #64, she's using the Danger Room to go through ways she could have saved him. The computer can give her another attempt. Real life can't. She keeps putting herself back in that moment anyway. Warlock makes it worse without meaning to. He doesn't understand death the way they do, and he takes Doug's body because he thinks he can help. Rahne has to deal with seeing her dead friend again while also realizing Warlock is grieving too. These are still kids. They've already been sent through things most of the adults around them would struggle to handle, and now they're supposed to know what to do with this.
