Then there's Lila Cheney, which is a ridiculous amount of complication to add to Sam's life.
She's a rock star, an interstellar teleporter, and a thief. The relationship starts in the first New Mutants annual, so this is happening while Sam is still learning to manage school and his powers.
New Mutants #42 brings Lila into his life back home. Sam's family and the people he grew up around aren't just background details that disappear once he puts on a uniform. He still cares about them, and now his superhero life is turning up around them too.
The Lila stories also take him well beyond school grounds. By the #66–70 stretch, her problems help pull the team into another off-world mess involving Spyder and Gosamyr.
Sam can be awkward, and the stories use that. But he's having to deal with a relationship where the other person's life includes entire worlds he knew nothing about. Being able to smash through a wall doesn't tell him what to do with any of that.
Then there's Lila Cheney, which is a ridiculous amount of complication to add to Sam's life.
