Then New Mutants #18–20 brings the Demon Bear right into the middle of it.
Dani has been living with the belief that this thing killed her parents. She goes out to face it alone, and it nearly kills her too. For a large part of the story, she's in a hospital while her friends try to keep the Bear from finishing the job.
That matters for Dani because she can't win this one by deciding she's tougher than everybody else. She's badly hurt. Other people have to protect her.
Illyana's Soulsword finally breaks the spell, and Dani's parents are released. They weren't simply killed by the Bear the way she believed.
The story gives her something back, but it doesn't immediately erase what happened to her body. She needs help recovering and isn't just up and running in the next scene.
With Bill Sienkiewicz drawing it, the Bear barely looks like something that belongs in the same world as these kids. Dani's private nightmare has become everybody else's problem, and they refuse to leave her in it.
