The school doesn't turn Dani into somebody who politely follows every instruction. She questions people, gets impatient, and is perfectly willing to argue with the person in charge. She starts out using Psyche before changing her name to Mirage. As she gets better with her powers, the images aren't limited to frightening people. Desires matter too. Understanding the person she's dealing with can be more useful than putting the biggest possible monster in front of them. She's also an archer. The bow gives her something she can use without having to rely on what is happening inside somebody else's head. Her connection with Rahne is another important part of those early stories. Dani can communicate with her through their psychic rapport, and their friendship becomes one of the consistent relationships in a team that keeps changing. By the time she and Sam are sharing leadership, she has people depending on her. She still makes mistakes. She also keeps stepping up instead of leaving every decision to Xavier.
