Dani Moonstar has already been through a hell of a lot before the New Mutants even have their own monthly book.
In Marvel Graphic Novel #4, she believes her parents are dead. Her grandfather Black Eagle wants Xavier to help her control her powers, and she wants nothing to do with him. She doesn't trust white people, and being told this particular man means well isn't enough to change that.
Then Donald Pierce's people kill Black Eagle. Dani joins the other kids while she's dealing with another loss, and she's angry enough to want revenge.
Her power makes those early scenes uncomfortable in a way punching someone wouldn't. She can pull somebody's fears out of their own head and make them appear in front of them. Sometimes she does it without meaning to. You don't have to physically hurt somebody to do damage with that.
That's where Dani starts. Angry, grieving, and carrying a power that can expose things people never agreed to share.
