Sean and Moira give him something else outside the team. Their relationship and his place on Muir Island let him have an adult life that doesn't depend on being available for every mansion emergency. Then the Moses Magnum fight in #119 damages his voice badly enough to take his sonic powers away. It's a serious consequence for somebody whose main means of fighting and flying comes through his throat. He doesn't get to shrug it off by the next issue. He's still involved during Proteus, when Muir Island and Moira are in danger. Being unable to use the scream doesn't remove his experience or make him stop caring about the people there. Eventually he steps away from regular X-Men duty. That fits what the injury has done to him, but it also means the book spends a long stretch without him as an active member.
