His relationship with Dazzler develops during that Australian stretch. There's affection there, but Alison is getting involved with somebody who has an enormous amount of his own life missing. And the missing past keeps intruding. He can't just decide that being happy with the X-Men answers every question about who he is or where he came from. During Inferno, N'astirh bites him and the demonic influence brings out selfishness and greed. His luck starts failing him. Madelyne can flatter him and Alison with the attention they want while other people need their help. Psylocke gives him something else to focus on: saving the children the Goblyn Queen is going to sacrifice. That gives him a reason to act for somebody else again. It doesn't instantly remove every doubt he has afterward, but it gets him helping. So his motives have a pretty immediate effect on whether his powers work. He can't treat his luck as something that owes him a good outcome regardless of what he's doing.
