The luck power sounds like an easy way out of any fight until you look at how it works. Longshot isn't simply guaranteed to win whatever he wants. His motives matter, and acting selfishly can interfere with the luck he's relying on. He also has actual physical skills. He's fast, acrobatic and good with the little throwing blades he carries. If something unlikely goes his way, he still has to be able to use the opening. Then there's his ability to pick up impressions from objects. That becomes important in Australia when the X-Men find the Reavers' stolen possessions in #230. Longshot can sense their histories, and Psylocke helps share what he's finding with the others. They use that to return things to the people they were stolen from. It's a whole team effort, with Madelyne doing the research and Gateway getting them where they need to go. Longshot's power gives them a way to find the people behind what otherwise looks like a pile of loot.
