Dazzler has a whole career before she becomes a regular X-Man. Her introduction in X-Men #130–131 is during the Hellfire Club story, but Alison Blaire isn't there looking for a superhero job. She's trying to be a singer. Her powers fit that pretty well. She takes sound and converts it into light, so a performance can come with a light show she creates herself. But the same power can produce a concentrated attack instead of stage effects. How much sound she has available matters. The X-Men and the Hellfire Club bring their fight into her life, and she helps the X-Men. When there's a chance to join them, though, she wants to keep pursuing music. That's where she starts. She's willing to help when somebody needs it. She just doesn't want every other thing she wants out of life to disappear because she's a mutant.
