Jubilee starts out living in a shopping mall. That's her introduction in Uncanny X-Men #244. She's getting by on her own, using her fireworks to put on little shows, and trying to avoid people who want her gone. Meanwhile, Storm, Rogue, Psylocke and Dazzler are taking a break from the Australian outback to go shopping. Jubilee sees them deal with the M-Squad, a bunch of mutant hunters who have picked a fight they really aren't equipped to handle. When the women leave through Gateway's portal, she follows them. Nobody recruits her. Nobody sits down and explains Xavier's school or offers her a room. She sneaks into the X-Men's home and stays out of sight. There's a whole stretch where she's living underneath their base and they don't even know she's there. That's a pretty strange way to join a superhero team. And it gets considerably worse before anybody realizes they've got a kid living with them.
