Alex and Lorna actually try leaving. After the Krakoa rescue, they quit the team and work toward a life together, including their geophysics work in New Mexico. That isn't a ridiculous ambition. The X-Men's idea of a normal week can involve somebody destroying the house. They still get pulled into things. Eric the Red controls them in #97. They help during Proteus. Being away from the mansion doesn't make them inaccessible to anybody looking for mutants to use. Alex's eventual return to the team is especially rough because Lorna's situation is getting worse at the same time. Malice has taken her over, and he ends up having to face someone he loves as an enemy. There's no clean separation between his personal life and the job. Trying to get one away from the other hasn't worked.
