Going back through Polaris's appearances, one thing keeps coming up. Lorna has a hell of a lot of power, and the writers keep finding somebody else to decide what she does with it.
She first shows up in X-Men #49. Bobby meets this woman with green hair who doesn't understand what's happening to her. By #50, Mesmero has dragged her into a whole scheme involving Magneto and the claim that she's his daughter.
The claim that she's Magneto's daughter is rejected in those early stories.
What matters here is how she gets introduced. Other people know things about her powers that she doesn't, and they immediately try to use that against her. She barely gets a chance to figure herself out before she's being told who she belongs with.
