Start with Alice. She's already been through Wonderland by the time we meet her as Calie's mom in Return to Wonderland. Calie sees what's going on with her, but she doesn't have the whole explanation for why her mom is like that. When Alice got out, part of her remained in Wonderland. That's where Lacie comes in. Lacie is connected to that part of Alice, and she's the one Calie meets over there who helps her get home. So Alice and Lacie don't go on the family tree as two sisters. Lacie is Alice's Wonderland counterpart. That's also why just counting faces or names can get confusing in these books. Back at home, Calie and Johnny have been growing up around their mom's problems without knowing everything that caused them. Calie eventually gets a firsthand look at the place Alice came from. By then, she has to find her own way out of it too.
