The experiment involves Henry Allen. His research opens a way into Wonderland, and his family gets caught up in what he's found. His wife Elizabeth becomes the Red Queen. Their son William becomes the King of Hearts, who also goes by the Suicide King. So those two already have a connection to each other before we get all the royal names. They're a mother and son from Earth. When you meet them in Wonderland, you're seeing what happened to Henry's family after the experiment. This comes from “The Experiment,” which ran as a backup in the first Tales from Wonderland one-shots. It's also included in House of Liddle. And the site comes up again. In Wonderland #17, Calie and Violet go back to where that original experiment happened while they're trying to find answers. They're still having to deal with a doorway somebody opened long before either of them got involved.
