Kitty Pryde and Wolverine takes Kitty to Japan because of her father, and then Ogun gets hold of her. He's one of the last people she needs to meet. Ogun was Wolverine's teacher, and he tries to turn Kitty into an assassin. That leaves Logan dealing with someone from his own past who has now done something terrible to a kid on his team. Helping her takes more than finding Ogun and fighting him. Kitty has been messed with badly. She needs to get control of herself again, and Logan has to help her learn how to deal with what happened without letting Ogun decide who she's going to become. You get a lot more of Wolverine as a teacher here. He has experience she needs, and he has to take responsibility for how he uses it. He can't just tell her to get angry and go stab somebody. Kitty still has her own decisions to make. Logan can help, but he's helping her get back to being able to make those decisions for herself. That's a long way from the first impression of this guy when he joined the X-Men.
