X-Men #132–133 gives you Wolverine loose inside the Hellfire Club while the rest of the team is in serious trouble. They've already knocked him out of the fight, or at least they think they have. He comes back from below and starts going through the guards. They're armed, they're in their own building, and they've still got a very bad problem on their hands. This is the kind of fight that really suits him. He can get close, use the space around him and keep moving. The guards have to find and stop him before he's close enough to hurt them. Having more men doesn't make that comfortable. And he's doing it because his teammates are trapped. All the arguments and problems he has with taking orders don't stop him from going back for them. That's a big difference from those first impressions of him. You might still hate having to argue with the man, but if you're captured, having Wolverine somewhere in the building suddenly sounds pretty good.
