There's a little scene in X-Men #109 that says a lot about how the others see Wolverine at this point. He wants to go hunting, and Storm assumes he means killing an animal. He's talking about sneaking up close enough to touch it. That's the challenge he's after. She has misunderstood him, and he knows it. He also knows it isn't the first time. Then James Hudson shows up as Weapon Alpha to bring him back to Canada. Logan considers that job over. The people he used to work for have other ideas. That grows into the Alpha Flight confrontation in #120–121. Now his old work is causing problems for his new teammates, and they're standing up for him instead of just letting him be taken. It helps fill in a lot. He's got people who know him, people who have worked with him and people who think they can still tell him where he belongs. He had a whole life before Xavier turned up, and leaving Canada didn't make all of it go away.
