Giant-Size X-Men #1 is where Xavier recruits him for the team going after the missing X-Men. Logan leaves his Canadian job, joins up, and almost immediately you've got another problem for whoever has to lead this group. He's argumentative. He doesn't take orders well. He has very different ideas from some of his teammates about how to deal with an enemy. Cyclops already has a lot to manage without a guy with claws questioning him all the time. The early issues also start giving you details that seem obvious now. In X-Men #98, he uses the claws without his gloves, and Banshee realizes they're coming out of his actual hands. In #103, we get the name Logan. In #116, a creature bites his hand and he explains that he heals quickly. Those things weren't all handed to the reader in the first appearance. You find out as you go, and a lot of the time his own teammates are finding out right along with you.
