8/8 The Being is still alive at the end of Ascension. He has lost his power, and now he's walking through the world he thought he could save. He sees the pain and destruction and finally accepts that he failed. Out in the desert, he calls for the Maker. He wants to know what he's supposed to do now that the purpose he built his life around is gone. A vision of the Maker appears and gives him one answer: live. The last image leaves him facing the sunrise. He doesn't get his throne back, and the story doesn't pretend that his good intentions repaired the damage. He has to keep going without the certainty that carried him into all of this. So Ascension closes with the Being defeated but alive, Innocence and Jackie dead, and Samantha gone. There is still another threat gathering beyond this story. Sela and the others have stopped one would-be savior, but they haven't stopped the Dark Queen or the Age of Darkness ahead of them.
