5/8 Zombies: The Cursed and Demons: The Unseen follow Elijah and Masumi before Samantha finds them for Sela. Both have already been through a terrible time by then. Elijah's story moves between modern New Orleans and his life in slavery. His relationship with Cassidy, the daughter of the man who enslaved him, leads to their escape and a family. The danger pursuing them includes the dead being raised and controlled. Cassidy is killed, and Elijah's connection with the Hunters grows out of that loss and his need to protect their child. In the present, the ring connected to that old horror brings Elijah into contact with a descendant. His family kept living while he was trapped in the Shadowlands. He has missed the life he should have had with them. He has to face Cassidy as one of the risen dead. Samantha eventually brings him back into Sela's effort. So when Samantha finds Elijah, he has already had to face his wife's body getting up and coming at him. The invasion has reached right into the life he lost. Masumi's branch gives her the possibility of a life with Gerard while she continues dealing with demonic possession. The Seven Deadly Sins want to combine as Legion, and the entity bound into her swords is part of what they need. Her weapons make her capable of fighting them while also making her a target. Gerard tries to help and is killed. Masumi contains the demons, but the victory costs her the person she had been trying to keep out of the danger. The Being has also been manipulating this confrontation because the demons are a threat to his own plans. Samantha's recruitment brings Masumi into the main gathering with that grief still fresh. Elijah has just faced Cassidy again. Masumi has just lost Gerard. There is barely time for either of them to deal with it before they are pulled back into Sela's fight. When Masumi struggles to keep going later, Gerard's death is still right there with her.
