THE DREAM EATER SAGA • 2/10
The prologue goes back to Baba Yaga's childhood, long before anyone is trying to put a group together to stop the Dream Eater.
The Dark One attacks her village in Myst. Her mother, Fel Yaga, tries to protect her, but Baba sees him murder her. Help arrives too late. The people pursuing him can keep going after him, but that doesn't bring her mother back.
Baba carries that hatred with her. So when she starts gathering people during the event, stopping the Dream Eater isn't the only thing on her mind. She's also trying to get close enough to kill the Dark One. The emergency gives her an opening she intends to use.
Once Upon a Time takes us back to the situation around Grimm Fairy Tales #50. The fight against the Dark One has gone badly enough that Thane goes to the Cave of Shadows and releases the Dream Eater. He's trying to stop one threat, and he lets out something that won't stay focused on that fight.
The opening moves between characters and time periods as they sense what's coming. Once the Dream Eater reaches Earth, it takes the appearance of an elderly man and starts hunting supernatural beings. The Queen of Hearts is its first major victim.
She's been a serious threat in the Wonderland books, and now something else is hunting her. That gets the danger across pretty quickly. Thane wanted a way to stop the Dark One, but he hasn't released something he can just point at an enemy and put away afterward.
