4. Olivia, before she became the queen
Grimm Universe #3 goes back to the Goblin Queen's origin, and the woman ruling these creatures began as a human girl named Olivia. She wanted to join the guard like her father and brothers. Being told that girls weren't allowed to do that didn't stop her wanting to protect her home.
A goblin attack destroys that future. Her family is caught in the violence, and she is taken prisoner. The girl who wanted to defend her kingdom ends up in the hands of the creatures that have devastated it.
When Olivia gets free, she turns that violence back on her captors. She kills goblins on her way to their king, kills him, and takes his heart. The surviving goblins urge her to eat it and become one of them. They offer her a place among the very people she has been fighting.
She initially resists, then accepts. The transformation is visible: horns grow, her hair changes, and the goblins hail their new queen. Her position has an origin, and it involves a human being changed through a specific act. Her story shouldn't be treated as a description of how every goblin is born.
The framing story makes the outcome especially grim. The queen is now responsible for the kind of destruction that once took her own family, and she kills a woman confronting her over it. Knowing what happened to Olivia explains how the story brought her here. The people suffering under her still have a reason to fear and oppose her.
