3. How Sela and Bolder get out The escape continues into issue #56, and the goblins are still a serious problem. Sela protects herself and Bolder with a magical barrier, but she can't maintain it indefinitely. The scene returns to the same weakness that brought them down before: her power has limits, and the attackers can keep waiting for those limits to matter. The arrival of wolves changes the fight. They drive goblins back and give the prisoners a chance that magic alone wasn't securing. The animals Sela helped have become part of the answer to the queen's trap. The queen is dangerous in person as well as through her followers. She draws a blade and fights Sela, pressing her hard enough to knock her down. Commanding goblins hasn't made her someone who can only threaten from a safe distance. A wolf then takes the queen's weapon, and Sela can demand the key. The queen gives it up, but leaves with a warning rather than becoming a harmless defeated figure. Sela and Bolder have gained what they came for and survived the encounter. That is already a substantial victory. Across these issues, the animals matter in several different ways. Bees find scattered objects, a duck reaches beneath the water, and wolves break up an attack. The help fits the situation. Sela's earlier choices return through creatures with abilities of their own, at the moments when she needs more than another burst of magic.
