1. The people Dorothy meets
The Munchkins in Zenescope's original Oz are one of the first signs that Dorothy has arrived somewhere rougher than the place she might have expected. They are short, armed, and drawn with a much more rugged, almost troll-like appearance. That is a description of the redesign, though. They are their own people, and Boggers is the name used for them in this version.
Their home is Bogg, and they already belong to a world divided between kingdoms and the territories controlled by the witches. Dorothy hasn't landed in a place that was waiting quietly for her adventure to begin. These people have their own surroundings and dangers to deal with before she becomes part of the story.
That helps explain why the familiar name can give you the wrong impression. A reader may hear “Munchkins” and picture a welcoming crowd at the beginning of Dorothy's journey. Here, the armed figures she encounters fit the much harsher Oz around them. Their size doesn't place them outside its conflicts.
The story also lets individual Boggers move beyond that first encounter. Sparky and Crumb become part of the traveling group, so they have to make decisions when the journey becomes dangerous. They are there for the injuries, rescue attempts, captivity, and fighting that follow.
Their appearance gets your attention first. What makes them worth coming back to is that they have something to do after Dorothy leaves the place where she met them.
