William Allen and his mother, Elizabeth, are one of the clearest examples. William becomes the King of Hearts, also known as the Suicide King. Elizabeth follows the hope of finding her missing son into Wonderland and is transformed into the Red Queen.
Those titles can make them sound like members of a royal family that has always belonged to the realm. Their origin is much more personal. They were a mother and child before Wonderland imposed those identities on them.
Elizabeth's efforts to make William remember his former life bring punishment and imprisonment. When she is freed, she can turn objects around her into creatures that fight for her. The transformation gives her terrifying power without removing her attachment to her son.
That attachment also explains why she recognizes something in Calie when Calie arrives looking for Violet. There is a connection between the two mothers beneath the different appearances and circumstances. Wonderland has changed Elizabeth, but it has not erased every part of the person who entered it.
