1/7 The Hatters are part of a much wider pattern in Wonderland. People arrive with families, histories, fears, and attachments, then become figures whose names almost conceal the lives they had before. Sometimes the change is physical. Sometimes it creates a new identity, a new position in the realm, or a punishment the person cannot escape. Those are different kinds of transformation, and they do not all happen through one universal rule. There is another distinction worth keeping clear: not every creature started as a human. The original Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit belong to Henry Allen's animal experiments. I've already covered Cheshire separately, so I am leaving his full history there. Here, the focus is on several of the human stories behind Wonderland's inhabitants. Following those origins makes the realm feel less like a collection of unrelated monsters and more like a place where damaged relationships keep taking new forms.
