The Sea Witch offers the mermaid a way out of their bargain through killing the prince. She cannot bring herself to do it, and the Witch kills her. Sara is also pushed toward revenge, but cannot shoot Stephen. She is arrested after firing into a vase, with her own future badly damaged.
That ending keeps the mermaid's refusal to murder someone at the center of the story. Compassion doesn't protect her from cruelty, and betrayal doesn't make revenge harmless. In this early Grimm version, the mermaid is caught between an unfaithful prince and a magical bargain designed to leave her with terrible choices.
