2/3 While hunting with his son, Thorne encounters a Skarab warrior. He sends his son to warn their chief, but when he returns home he takes his wife and child into hiding rather than staying to defend the village. Saving his family means abandoning others who are in danger. His shame follows him into the quest with Glinda and Dorothy. That gives the values he grew up with a painful context. Protecting the people closest to him is understandable, but it doesn't erase what his departure meant for his wider community. Thorne has to live with both parts of that choice.
