Derrick Sobers is part of the scientific side of HiboCorp, and Code Red gives him an introduction with an actual personality behind the job. He's working on the Cyclops Eye, but the research hasn't exactly produced a satisfying explanation of what they're holding. That puts the scientist in the same world as everybody else: having access to a magical object doesn't mean you understand it. Then Britney arrives and his attention becomes a different problem. He asks her to call him Derrick rather than Doctor Sobers, gets visibly flustered, and later wonders about love at first sight. Zoe is right there to tease him about it. It's a very ordinary sort of awkwardness to find inside a place dealing with supernatural threats. For a moment, the lab has the atmosphere of coworkers watching someone make a very obvious impression on their colleague. The unusual object on the workbench hasn't stopped them from behaving like people at work. That also keeps the science side from becoming an automatic answer to the story's problems. Derrick has a title, a lab and an object to study. Those things establish his job, not omniscience. The gap between possessing something and understanding it is still there. His attraction is part of this introduction. It isn't an established romance with Britney, and there's no reason to turn Zoe's teasing into proof of one. The scene gives us a researcher who can be distracted and embarrassed without needing an invented relationship to make him more substantial.
