14. Where Age of Darkness leaves Zeus and Julian Godstorm: Age of Darkness gives Zeus a quieter conclusion than the image of a fallen god initially suggests. After his apparent death, the story follows him in a human guise. Julian helps him without recognizing him as his father. Their conversation brings the whole relationship down to something much smaller than a divine battle. Julian talks about the father he believes he has lost. He is also taking supplies to a shelter and refuses to abandon that responsibility just because danger is nearby. Zeus sees that his son is helping people. Zeus then chooses to leave his old life behind. He wants to help and guide rather than remain trapped in the cycle of divine battles. The story lets him say farewell to the people who mattered to him, including his brothers, Venus, and Julian. That ending brings the pantheon's central conflict into focus. These characters have extraordinary power, but their hardest problems are responsibility, resentment, love, and the damage they leave behind. Their modern lives force those problems into the open. The question becomes what they will do differently, once ruling and fighting are no longer enough.
