10. Ares: bringing war into the present
Ares is the most direct expression of the old gods carrying their violent priorities into the modern world. The Angel story places that conflict in contemporary Greece, including the occupation of the parliament and Heather's confrontation with him.
That setting matters. War is no longer kept at a comfortable distance in a mythic past. The divine struggle enters a recognizable political space, and people in the present have to deal with it.
Ares also remains part of Venus's plans. At the end of Godstorm, even after her defeat, she threatens to free him from the underworld and return against Zeus. It shows how she sees his usefulness: he is an ally whose capacity for violence can sustain her feud.
Within this part of the story, Ares represents a refusal to leave that older pattern behind. Where other members of the family are trying to build different lives or repair relationships, war remains something he brings with him.
