4. Julian and Zagreus Julian's story starts in a criminal world of orders, violence, and manipulation. The revelation that he is Zagreus, Zeus's son, connects that human life to the divine conflict. His anger has consequences far beyond the world he initially understands. Venus recognizes how useful that anger is. When Julian is sent after her, she works on his sense that he should be the one with power instead of the one carrying out someone else's orders. She offers him a way to interpret his pain that serves her purposes. His relationship with Zeus makes the manipulation more dangerous. An absent father, a son who has reasons to resent him, and a goddess who knows where to push all come together. Julian is responsible for what he does, but the story also shows the people who help turn him into a weapon. That is why his later movement toward helping people matters. His story leaves room for a life beyond the role other people assigned him, without making the damage he caused disappear.
