Elijah's past is essential to understanding why he is the person at the center of The Cursed. His story reaches back to the nineteenth century, and he is a man who escaped slavery. Trauma, heartbreak, guilt, and a deeply rooted sense of duty shape his involvement in the present.
His history deserves to remain part of the discussion rather than being reduced to background for an action character. The book connects his confrontation with the undead to the weight he already carries. Being a monster hunter does not mean he has left the injuries of his own life behind. They affect what the mission means to him.
