SELA MATHERS Sela's opening scenes with Skye get straight to the problem of teaching someone powerful. During a confrontation with orcs, she gives her daughter an instruction. Skye decides to handle it her own way, and the result includes considerably more property damage than intended. Sela doesn't treat that as proof her daughter is hopeless. She brings the conversation back to listening and learning. But being Skye's mother complicates everything. Skye knows Sela loves her while still feeling that her mother doesn't really know her. Sela also has a larger reason to take the school seriously. At the sanctuary in Myst, she looks at statues of earlier Realm Knights and thinks about the people who didn't survive. Training the students means preparing them for dangers with real consequences. She wants them to honor what came before, but she also wants them to live. That gives the school a much heavier purpose than collecting talented young people and showing them impressive tricks. Sela is trying to teach lessons that might keep them from becoming another set of memorials.
