In Return to Wonderland, Cheshire is a predator Calie has to survive. That first impression is deliberately brutal. His presence makes the landscape dangerous even before you get to the people claiming authority over it. Then Tales from Wonderland: The Cheshire Cat makes room for another side of the original. On Earth, his story involves a developing conscience and a caring young woman who takes him in. That is why I think the different stages deserve attention. The hunting creature and the possibility of affection exist within the same character history. If you only keep the most vicious image of him, you lose the tension that makes the rest of the story worth examining.
