The series makes his connection to the Liddles especially disturbing. By the recap in Wonderland #17, we are told that he had been gaining power from their bloodline, including Alice, for decades. Their suffering has a purpose to him. That makes the family’s place in the story feel particularly cruel. They are people with lives, relationships, and children. To the force pursuing them, they are also a source of power. Calie defeats him and rescues her infant daughter, but that victory comes out of a much longer history of exploitation. It is worth remembering how much is behind that confrontation. She is fighting for a child and for the possibility that the family’s future can be different from its past.
