ORCUS'S ATTACK ON TALLUS The other side of the Tallus story is Orcus's invading army. Its threat begins before the fighting. By offering to spare the children if the city turns on Sela's company, Orcus makes the people behind the walls fight among themselves. The army gives that demand weight. The defenders have to deal with frightened civilians, compromised leadership and an approaching military assault at the same time. Orcus also has Gruel, whose transformation introduces another kind of danger when the battle escalates. The assault moves from intimidation, to soldiers, to a dragon. These are different parts of one attack, with Orcus choosing how to use them against the city.
