Croc belongs with the Neverland side of Grimm Fairy Tales. He’s one of the creatures that makes the danger of that place feel physical. Nathan Cross loses an arm to the Croc, and the injury becomes part of the identity we know as Hook. That connection matters beyond the familiar name. Nathan can get away from Neverland and still carry visible evidence of what happened there. When he returns, the danger isn’t theoretical to him. He already knows what surviving an encounter can cost. It’s worth keeping the individual Croc separate from Neverland’s wider population of monstrous crocodiles, too. The stories use both. Nathan’s injury is a specific character connection; the broader creatures help establish why moving through the realm can be dangerous even before anybody reaches Pan.
