Samelia's place in the crew has a lot to do with how other people respond to her power. She can use magic, but that doesn't automatically give her control of her own situation. Being able to hurt someone and being able to choose whether you do it are two very different things. That becomes important again during the Eyes of Fire story. She's left with Queen Alorana while Sinbad and the others go after the other half of the Sunfury Amulet. Alorana has her own plans for her, and the crew's adventure becomes tied to getting Samelia out of that situation. She also has a personal connection to Ashcroft that runs through the larger adventure. His concern for her gives the relationship something to build on before either of them is in a position to have a normal life. Their moments together happen around all the danger and movement, rather than in some separate story where everything else stops. With Samelia, the thing to keep in mind is that her magic doesn't erase her vulnerability. In fact, it's part of why people want to control her. That makes the question of who respects her choices important whenever she's dealing with someone more powerful or better positioned than she is. The crew gives her people who have a reason to come back for her. Considering how this group began, that carries some weight.
