Sinbad has a lot going on underneath the confidence. He's been accused of murder, and the search for the Jericho Visor is tied to his effort to clear his name. So even when the story is giving us monsters, islands, and magical objects, there's a reason he can't just decide he's had enough and settle down somewhere. That makes his behavior as a captain worth paying attention to. He can be reckless, and he certainly doesn't approach every problem quietly. But he also puts himself between other people and danger. The beginning with Orland tells us that before the crew has any particular reason to trust him. There's also a practical side to how he deals with the people around him. During the Egypt portion, he entrusts Ashcroft with a letter that needs to reach Baghdad. Ashcroft initially feels like he's being left out, but Sinbad explains that he's choosing someone he trusts. An errand can look like a dismissal until you understand why that particular person is being asked to do it. Meanwhile, Sinbad's own past keeps showing up. The woman who can guide them to the City of the Dead turns out to be Osmium, someone who already knows him and has a very different greeting in mind than the one he might have hoped for. His reputation opens doors, but it doesn't mean everyone behind those doors is happy to see him. That gives him a lot more to deal with than simply being the best swordsman in the room.
