Zinna is killed early in Dorothy's original Oz adventure, but the things she did before Dorothy arrived keep affecting the story afterward. She and Lynessa are daughters of Zamora, and both are involved in the struggle over the Veridian Scepter. Dorothy kills Zinna using the scepter. That is an important change from the familiar image of a house landing on the Wicked Witch of the East. Dorothy's ability to use the weapon becomes part of the conflict immediately. It tells the surviving forces that this newcomer cannot simply be ignored. Bartleby is one of the clearest reminders of Zinna's cruelty. The scarecrows are connected to the way she punished people, and the aftermath of her rule doesn't disappear when she does. There are still prisoners, frightened people, and consequences the other characters have to deal with. It is worth separating how long a villain remains on the page from how much damage they have caused. Zinna doesn't need to be present throughout the journey for her actions to shape it. Dorothy has entered a world with an existing history, and part of that history is walking beside her in the form of the Scarecrow. That makes her an important part of the original witches' side, even though Lynessa becomes the much more sustained threat. Zinna helps establish what their rule has meant for the people who actually live in Oz.
