Mutt deserves a place in this walkthrough because he is useful well beyond these two stories. With the DLC available, speak with Theresa at the Rattay mill about taking him along. Again, recruiting him does not require starting or finishing her flashback. Theresa’s dog Tinker and Henry’s companion Mutt are different dogs.
Feed him decent meat and praise him as you travel. That supports obedience and develops Houndmaster. Watch the condition of the food instead of handing him whatever spoiled meat is sitting at the bottom of the inventory.
The perks give you practical reasons to keep training him. Hunt opens at Houndmaster level three, Sic at five, and Seek at thirteen. Hunting makes him useful when you’re gathering game. Sic lets you direct him at an opponent, which can create an opening in a fight. Seek helps him locate interesting places and containers you might otherwise walk past.
He can still get overwhelmed. If repeated attacks drive his obedience down and he runs off, that does not mean he has permanently died. Let him return and take care of him rather than assuming the companion is gone from the save.
That covers the whole DLC: Theresa’s escape, Johanka’s questline and trial, plus the companion system you can keep using afterward.
