Multiple Man has a power that sounds simple until you spend more than a minute thinking about what living with it would actually involve. Jamie Madrox can create physical duplicates of himself through impact. These aren’t projections that disappear if someone realizes they’re being fooled. There can be another Jamie standing in the room, moving around and doing things. Even the basic version of that is useful in so many ways. You need help carrying something, searching an area, or overwhelming somebody in a fight, and your power can provide the extra people. But physical impact is also a pretty inconvenient trigger when you’re trying to get through a normal day. A power like that needs management long before anyone starts talking about using it on a team. His introduction in Giant-Size Fantastic Four #4 gets into that problem. Jamie comes from an isolated upbringing, with a special suit helping him manage his duplication. When that protection fails, his powers become a problem that pulls other people into the situation. He doesn’t arrive as an experienced hero with a polished plan for what he wants to do. That background helps explain why Muir Island makes sense for him. Moira’s work gives him somewhere his mutation can be understood, and the island gives him a place among other people whose lives don’t fit very comfortably into the outside world. I like looking at that part of the X-Men world because not every mutant has to become a front-line superhero to matter. Someone can live there, help out, form friendships, and still end up involved when something dangerous happens. Jamie has that kind of connection to the larger cast. You can find him around these stories without needing him to be wearing the same uniform as everybody else.
