One very specific Bobby moment worth talking about is how he helps reach Warren when Apocalypse has turned him into Death. In X-Factor #25, Bobby creates an ice replica of himself. Warren destroys it and believes he has killed his friend. The shock helps him turn against Apocalypse. That's a dangerous plan, and it depends on Bobby believing there is still something in Warren that Apocalypse hasn't managed to destroy. He is using what he knows about his friend as much as he's using his power. There are several ways that situation could have become a straightforward contest of force. Bobby instead tries to make Warren recognize what he's doing. The replica only needs to be convincing at the crucial moment. The real effect comes from Warren's response to it. It doesn't undo what happened to Warren or mean everything between the friends is suddenly settled. It helps interrupt the hold Apocalypse has over him. That is a substantial contribution from the person who can so easily be summarized as the team's funny one. And the scene works because these men have a shared past. Bobby is taking an enormous chance on the friend he remembers still being reachable. The ice is the mechanism, but years of knowing each other are what make him think the idea might work. It's a very personal use of an ability that often looks playful on the page.
