Even the way Bobby looks when he uses his powers develops early on. The original snowy appearance gives way to a more solid, icy one as he gets better at controlling what he's doing. That makes his progress visible. There is a difference between having an ability and learning how to use it deliberately.
Iceman also has a power that gives artists a lot to work with. An ice slide changes how he travels through a scene. A wall changes what an enemy can reach. A frozen surface changes whether somebody can keep their footing. The shape he chooses matters, not just how much ice he produces.
That lets him contribute to a team fight without every contribution being a direct attack. He can create a route, interrupt movement, or put something between a threat and another person. When several characters are fighting at once, somebody who can alter the space around them has a lot of options.
What matters in these scenes is whether he sees the useful application quickly enough. Sometimes the smartest move available to him is a shape, a barrier, or a distraction instead of a bigger blast of cold.
