The Morlock story is a particularly uncomfortable part of Warren's history. Callisto takes him because she wants him as her consort, and he ends up being treated like something she has decided she is entitled to keep. Storm has to confront her to get him back. Warren's appearance is central to the situation. The same wings that make him look beautiful and almost unreal to somebody else do not give him any say in what that person wants to do with him. He is the person being held there, regardless of the fantasy somebody has built around him. That is a very different position from the image of a wealthy young man who should be able to get whatever he wants. His status does not protect him underground. Neither does being an X-Man. He needs his friends, and Storm's willingness to go into that confrontation becomes the thing that gets him out. It also gives his wings a more complicated place in the story long before Apocalypse gets involved. They can be a source of freedom, but they can also make him a target. Other people keep attaching their own ideas to what he looks like, while Warren is the one who has to live with what follows.
