Alpha is the person who makes the Circle's plans an immediate problem for Britney and her team. An organization can have a lot of resources and a dangerous objective, but he's the one walking into secure locations, taking the people it needs, and making the heroes deal with him face to face. He's a laboratory-enhanced soldier, also identified as the First Knight. The original Red Agent series introduces him in the middle of an operation aboard a government ship. He gets through the guards and takes Eve, and his intention is already bigger than escaping with one captive. Her technology is part of making more soldiers possible. That gives the early story a fairly clear danger. Britney has to deal with someone who is extremely difficult to stop on his own, while the organization behind him is trying to multiply the problem. By the time an army is involved, they've moved well past one enemy hunting one target. His next objective is Ditto, because the Circle needs his hacking abilities. That makes Alpha both the physical threat and the person connecting the different parts of the plan. Eve has already been taken. Ditto is still out there. Britney has to get to him before Alpha finishes that part of the operation too. The first fight shows how badly she can get hurt trying. Alpha overpowers her, and Avril has to intervene. Britney's wolf transformation changes what she can do to him, and she inflicts serious damage, but that still doesn't remove him from the story. He keeps coming back into their way. Avril's history with him is important. He was involved in the killing of the witches from her coven, so their fights don't begin with a clean introduction between two strangers. She has a reason to hate him before the Circle's current plan even enters the picture. He can provoke her through that history as well as threaten her physically. His equipment and enhancements also fit the kind of conflict Red Agent is dealing with. The heroes have magic and supernatural abilities, and he's using an altered body and advanced technology against them. You end up with a werewolf and a witch fighting somebody who has been engineered into a weapon. The story doesn't have to leave the Grimm universe to bring that sort of science-fiction threat into it. By The Human Order, his conflict with the team has spread into attacks on the Initiative itself. The danger reaches the places and people they rely on, rather than staying confined to a mission somewhere else. That makes it much harder to separate the next assignment from what he's already done to them. For this part of the reading, Alpha is the recurring enemy connecting several people's worst experiences. Britney has her direct battles with him, Avril has her coven, and Ditto and Eve are caught in operations that depend on exploiting what they can do. He's dangerous because he can fight them, but also because he's prepared to go after the people and resources they need in order to keep fighting at all.
