Eve was one of the characters I liked the most in Red Agent. A lot of the first story revolves around what other people want to do with her, but her involvement with the team, especially Ditto, is what made me want to talk about her separately. She's an android with the appearance of a young girl. When Alpha takes her from the government ship at the beginning, the Circle is interested in her technology and what it could make possible. She's valuable to them because they want to build their operation around it. That puts her in the middle of the conflict before she gets much say in any of it. The Circle also needs Ditto, which is how the search for him and the effort to recover Eve become part of the same problem. Britney is trying to keep him out of their hands, while Eve is already trapped inside the operation. They aren't two unrelated people the team happens to run across. The enemy's plan connects them from the beginning. Her appearance can also make it easy to underestimate what she's capable of. During the original series, her connection to Ditto reaches into his mind through the technology they're involved with. There's much more going on than a childlike figure waiting for somebody to open a cell. The systems and abilities around her can put other people in serious danger too. That's why her later involvement with Ditto matters. By The Human Order, he's living in an artificial body and trying to recover memories that didn't come through intact. Eve helps with that. The relationship has moved a long way from the Circle wanting to use a hacker to get access to an android. Now they're working together on something that matters to him as a person. I thought those two worked well together. Ditto had a human life before his existence changed, while Eve is artificial herself. There's a lot to work with in putting them beside each other without making them the same character. He's trying to hold on to his memories and figure out what has been done to him. She's somebody who can actually help him with that, rather than just tell him everything will be fine. It was a shame how things turned out for her. I really liked her involvement, and losing her was one of the parts of this run I was disappointed to see happen. There's a difference between the opening of the story, where everybody is pursuing her because she's useful, and reaching the point where she's part of the group you're following. By then, I wanted to keep seeing what she and Ditto would do together. Eve deserves more than a passing mention as the android the Circle wanted. She's tied into why the original team comes together, the technological threat they're dealing with, and one of the most interesting changes any of these characters goes through. Her part in Ditto's recovery alone gives her a much more personal place in the story.
