Avril Williams brings a whole history with her when she joins Britney in Red Agent. She's a witch, and her reason for going after Alpha is already personal before she and Britney start working together.
Her earlier story in Coven involves the New Crusaders targeting witches. Avril is one of the people they're after, and the deaths of the women around her aren't just background details when Alpha turns up again. She knows what he's done. When she enters the fight in Red Agent, she has her own reason to be there.
That gives the first meeting with Britney some tension. They're dealing with the same immediate threat, but they didn't arrive with the same assignment. Britney is trying to protect Ditto and stop the Circle's operation. Avril is confronting somebody connected to the destruction of her coven. Working together starts with that shared enemy, and the relationship has to develop from there.
Her magic is useful in several different ways. She can attack with energy and use it defensively, but she can also change the things around her. The locked door she turns into glass while they're looking for Ditto is a good example. You can put somebody with her abilities into a situation that looks like it needs tools or brute force, and she has a completely different way of handling it.
She's also willing to get directly into a dangerous encounter. When she attacks Alpha in the early issues, she doesn't stay somewhere safe and send Britney in to handle the consequences. He can overpower her too. Having access to magic doesn't mean she can walk into a fight without being hurt, especially against somebody she already has so much anger toward.
Britney's physical abilities, Avril's magic, and Ditto's technology make the original group pretty varied. They don't all offer a different version of the same attack. Avril can help them get through something physically blocking their way, respond to a magical problem, or fight while the others are handling a different part of the situation.
As the group moves into The Human Order, she and Britney also have a relationship outside the immediate action. Avril is there when Britney has to talk through what has happened to Ryder. They have to keep working with each other after the loss, rather than having every conversation become a new set of mission instructions.
That matters for Avril too, because she's already someone who knows what it means to lose people violently. Her own history hasn't disappeared just because she's joined a government-backed operation. She's carrying it into a group that is now taking losses of its own.
By the Vatican mission, she's still doing several kinds of work at once. She can provide magical light as they move underground, notice a change that suggests nearby magic, and then take part in the fighting when they reach their enemies. Those are smaller details than a huge spell, but they show why the team needs her there.
Avril's place in Red Agent is much easier to understand when you keep both sides of her story in view: the abilities she contributes and the experiences that brought her into this fight. She has a reason to pursue Alpha, and she gradually becomes someone Britney depends on for considerably more than a blast of magic.
