Britney Waters has a lot more going on than the name Red Riding Hood would suggest. By the time she takes on the Red Agent role, she already has her own history in the Grimm universe, and the spy stories give her another set of responsibilities on top of it. She's a werewolf, she's been part of the Realm Knights, and now she's the person the Highborn Initiative wants out in the field. That gives her several things to bring into an assignment. There's the physical danger of her transformed state, but there's also her experience with people and situations that an ordinary government agent wouldn't be equipped to handle. The Initiative recruits her to help deal with the Circle, an organization targeting Highborns. She agrees on the condition that she can do things her way. That tells you something about the arrangement right from the start. She'll work with the organization, but she's bringing her own judgment into the job. The original assignment sends her after Ditto before Alpha can get him. It goes badly enough to establish that she can't simply charge through everything because she's a werewolf. Alpha can hurt her. Avril's intervention helps change that encounter, and Britney's transformation lets her fight back in a much more brutal way. She has claws and the strength to do real damage, but she still needs another person there. Her weapons and combat skills also remain part of how she operates. She doesn't spend the whole series transformed. She can use guns, blades, and the practical work of finding people and following leads. The wolf form changes what she's capable of when a fight escalates, but there are plenty of parts of the mission that have to happen before the fight. Once Avril and Ditto are alongside her, she also has to account for what they're dealing with. Avril has a personal history with Alpha. Ditto is being hunted because of his abilities. Eve is being held because of what her technology could do. Britney has to keep moving toward the objective while all of those problems are happening at once. The Human Order puts more pressure on her as a leader. The losses around the Initiative have consequences beyond the next briefing or the next target. She has to keep going with people missing from the group and others badly hurt. Her conversation with Avril about Ryder is part of that. The characters have to live with what happened after the action is over. There's also a useful distinction between being responsible for yourself and being responsible for a team. Britney can decide how much danger she's willing to put herself in. Once other people are following her, the same decision involves their lives too. These stories keep putting her in the position of having to act without being able to guarantee that everybody gets back. That's the Britney at the center of Red Agent: someone with the power to physically tear into an enemy, working through operations where strength only solves some of the problems. Her relationships with Avril, Ditto, and Eve give the assignments people she actually has to look after, and the series doesn't let those people stay safely in the background.
